Mr. Amit Kumar is a Mechanical Engineer with specialization in thermal engineering from University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) where he received the University Gold Medal in 1981.
Mr. Kumar retired from TERI in 2021. As Senior Director, Social Transformation, he was responsible for initiatives focusing on energy access led rural development. Earlier, Mr. Kumar had led research activities in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency applications, in TERI. He had been working on the development and diffusion of clean energy technological solutions for close to 40 years. His experience encompasses policy and programme formulation, project implementation, development and deployment of RE technologies, as well as manufacturing of solar energy devices. Mr. Kumar has also coordinated SE4All Capacity Building Hub of the UN’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative as well as that of REEEP (Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership) – South Asia Secretariat as its Regional Programme Advisor. As Dean (Distance & Short-Term Education), TERI School of Advanced Studies between 2014 and 2016; he was responsible for development of online courses, management & faculty development programmes, and other skill enhancement initiatives. Presently, he is associated with WRI India in the advisory capacity.
Mr. Kumar also spends time in reading, painting, and writing.
